![]() ![]() Winchester put serial numbers on all 92's. The usual reason for lack of a serial number on older guns is that the gun was refinished and in polishing the number was removed. In the old days, before the 1934 Federal Firearms Act, there was no law prohibiting removal of the serial number and no one much cared. Serial Muvee Reveal X 10.5 Serial Numbers. Today, it is illegal in the U.S. To possess a firearm from which the serial number has been removed. I understand there are ways to 'get right' with the law on this, but I am not an attorney and would prefer not to get into the issue. Lefty475, welcome to the Forum. I don't want to be Captain Bringdown, but there have been several threads lately where people have been told that the BATF considers it a crime to possess a firearm that does not have a serial number, except for antiques (guns made before 1898). I hope that a) I have misunderstood what I have read, and b) you are wrong about where the serial number of this gun ought to be. People who know a lot more than I do should be along soon, but brace yourself in case of bad news. PS - pictures of the gun, including where you think the SN ought to be, would be a big help. I have a 1892 Winchester that has W.R.A.C.O. Stamped where the serial number goes. It was my great, great grandfather's. It is my understanding that around the turn of the century, Sears sold the 1892's through their catalog and they ground off the serial numbers on some they sold because they sold them at a lower price than their agreement with Winchester. The gun later went back to Winchester for gunsmith work (repair) and it was then that Winchester stamped W.R.A.C.O. (for Winchester Repeating Arms Company) where the serial number used to be. The location of the mark is underside of the receiver near where the magazine tube screws into it. My Winchester is a 1895 year model. Hi, Lanrezac, It is not what I or BATFE 'considers' a crime. The law, Title 18 USC 922 (k) says: ' It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to transport, ship, or receive, in interstate or foreign commerce, any firearm which has had the importer’s or manufacturer’s serial number removed, obliterated, or altered or to possess or receive any firearm which has had the importer’s or manufacturer’s serial number removed, obliterated, or altered and has, at any time, been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce. A firearm made before 1968 did not have to have a serial number (and many do not) but if it had a serial number, the above seems to apply; no exception is made for antique firearms, and in any case the date of manufacture could not be determined without a serial number. That being said, it is difficult to imagine BATFE arresting, and any sane US Attorney prosecuting, anyone over a missing serial number on a lever action rifle. But then, recent events have shown that some US Attorneys are not quite sane on the subject of guns. I have a 1892 Winchester that has W.R.A.C.O. Stamped where the serial number goes. Hello, I know this is an OLD thread but I wanted to add a few things and ask a couple questions to help me with a research survey I am working on for the Model 1892 rifles. Lefty475, Your rifle was almost certainly manufactured some time between 1910 and 1917. This is the time period within which the style and positions of the various stamped writing on your rifle were used.
